Prawn Malai curry  – Bengali style Chingri macher malai curry recipe is for prawn lovers especially for kids.

Prawn Malai curry is basically a cream-based curry with coconut milk powder.  It is a very popular Bengali preparation and serves in any celebrations. Most of the children are very much fond of Prawn. It has no fishbone and very soft to eat.

I almost cook Prawn Malai curry for my daughter. One of her friends comes to our house only to take this delicious dish. This dish is compulsory for any occasion especially “Bhai Fota” along with other dishes in our family get together. Members of any age group are just loved it.

About Prawn 

There are 300 prawns in the world. Only a few are available for commercial purposes. Among them, Lobster, Giant tiger prawn, Shiba prawn, White prawn, Bagda prawn are available in our fish market. Though malai curry can be prepared by all types of prawns, I prefer lobsters. The main central vein is very much harmful to our stomach. So, do not forget to remove this.

Tips for Prawn Malai curry

⇒ The preparation can be made in different ways. But I like to prepare it simply.

⇒ Some use cashew nuts and raisins, but I do not like to use those. It will be heavy for digest.

⇒ You can use coconut scrap, but the taste of coconut milk powder is different. The smooth and creamy texture cannot come with coconut scrap.

⇒ The taste of this dish is different by using different ingredients. I like to prefer my procedure which is tasty, creamy, non-spicy and with the full flavour of prawn.

⇒ I mostly use olive oil to cook. But there are some dishes which are cooked by using mustard oil because of the strong smell. Mustard oil adds a great flavour to some dishes. You can use mustard oil to cook this recipe.

⇒ I use Kashmiri red chilli powder for the colour of the curry. This chilli powder is not spicy. If anyone likes spicy, can add red chilli powder.

It is a mouth-watering dish and served with hot boiled rice. You can take this dish throughout the year. Children are very fond of this delicious dish.

Step 1

Wash prawns thoroughly under the tapping water. Make sure that all prawns are deveined.

Step 2

Add salt and turmeric powder with prawns. Fry the prawns and keep them aside.

Step 3

Paste onion, garlic, ginger, tomato green chilli and Maggi coconut milk powder in a mixer grinder.

Step 4

Take a pan or Kadai. Pour oil into a pan and heat it. Add bay leaf, dry red chilli and white whole cumin.

Step 5

Add the paste of onion, garlic, ginger, green chilli, tomato and coconut milk powder and stir well. Cover the pan and cook for 2/3 minutes on a low flame.

Step 6

Add turmeric powder, cumin powder, Kashmiri red chilli powder, salt and sugar. Mix well and cover it for 3/4 minutes on a low flame.

Step 7

Add fried prawns, mix well and cover with lid. Cook for 2/3 minutes in a low flame.

Step 8

Add some water and again cook for 5 minutes. Add ghee and garom masala.

Step 9

Your delicious dish is ready for the meal. Serve it with hot boiled rice.


This recipe is very simple and easy. Just keep in your mind that the preparation will be made on a low flame. If you cook on a low flame the entire food is evenly cooked and boiled. The taste is also fabulous. Must try at home and share your experience.
